How Can I Believe in Science and Creation?

Pastor Stephen unpacks how a Christian worldview and science work together--because all truth is God's truth.

Science & Faith

THE BIG IDEA

God has left His fingerprints all over creation. When we look at the natural world honestly, there is no other logical

conclusion than that a supernatural God created it — and that same God didn’t just prove Himself to you, He gave

Himself for you.

POINT 1

You Can Be a Person of Science AND a Person of Faith

• Sir Isaac Newton (physics), Antoine Lavoisier (chemistry), Gregor Mendel (genetics), Galileo (astronomy),

Francis Bacon (scientific method) — all Christians.

• Newton wrote Principia Mathematica hoping it would lead people to believe in a Creator.

• Oxford University’s motto: Dominus Illuminatio Mea — “The Lord is my light” (Psalm 27).

• Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge displays Psalm 111:2 above its entrance.

“Scientists did research because they were looking for laws in nature, and they were looking for laws in

nature because they believed in a Lawgiver.” — John Lennox

POINT 2

Strong Evidence for God in Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology

• Einstein’s equations (1915) showed the universe is expanding; Hubble confirmed it in 1929.

• An expanding universe means it had a beginning — something came from nothing, just as Genesis describes.

• Fine-tuning of gravity: set to one inch on a ruler stretched across 28 billion light-years. Move it one inch either

way and we don’t exist.

• Cosmological constant: precise to 1 in 1053 possible values.

• Strong nuclear force: a change of 1 part in 1040 and only hydrogen would exist.

• Even a multiverse hypothesis still requires a fine-tuned “universe generator” — the problem doesn’t go away.

POINT 3

Evidence for a Creator in the Animal Kingdom

• The Pacific golden plover migrates 3,000+ miles over open ocean from Alaska to Hawaii.

• Parents leave first; newborn chicks — who have never been to Hawaii and have no guide — bulk up and fly

there on their own.

• Humans didn’t even discover Hawaii until ~300 AD. These birds have been finding it since creation.

POINT 4

Incredibly Strong Evidence for a Creator in DNA

• Nature produces patterns (ripples in sand), but not information (writing in sand).

• The simplest cell requires ~250 proteins; each protein needs ~1,000 letters of genetic code in perfect order.

• The simplest cell ever found contains 530,000 letters of genetic code.

• Odds of just one functional protein forming by chance: 1 in 1074.

• Even with 14 billion years, researchers found a single protein that started folding at the Big Bang “would still be

thrashing about today.”

“Natural selection may explain the survival of the fittest, but it does not explain the arrival of the fittest.” —

Dr. Hugo DeVries

POINT 5

God Didn’t Just Prove Himself TO You — He Gave Himself FOR You

The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is the one through whom all things were made

(John 1:3). You can have everything in this world without Christ and have nothing, or have nothing in this world with

Christ and have everything.

THE STORY OF E.V. HILL

Pastor E.V. Hill received death threats for preaching the gospel in Los Angeles. One morning he woke to find his wife

Jane gone. He ran outside and saw her driving their car around and around the neighborhood. When he stopped her,

she said: “I heard the threatening phone calls. You preach the gospel to so many people. I would much rather it

happened to me than to you.”

That is exactly what Jesus did for us. The enemy threatened to destroy our lives, and Jesus got in our car and drove it

around. He took the nails, the thorns, and the cross — so it would happen to Him instead of to us. That is the

gospel.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have

been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” —
