Day 7: “Hi, I’m Here to Be Your Server”
Matthew 20:26–28 (NLT)
"Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Main Idea
When you sit down at a restaurant, the first thing your server says is some version of the same line: “Hi, I’m going to be your server today.” And the moment they say it, a relational dynamic is set. They’re there for you. Their job is to pay attention to what you need and make sure you get it.
Jesus says that’s supposed to be you. Not just on mission trips. Not just at church. Everywhere. With everyone. The whole posture of your life is supposed to be: “Hi, I’m here to be your server.”
But here’s the part that makes this hard. The line between the humble side and the not-humble side isn’t knowledge. It’s not a test you pass. It’s sacrifice. That’s what divides the two sides. You can know everything about servant leadership and never actually cross the line, because crossing it costs something.
For Jesus, the cost was everything. He left the throne of heaven. He lived as a homeless rabbi in an occupied territory. He washed the feet of men who would abandon him. He died a criminal’s death for people who didn’t deserve it. That’s what the line looked like for him.
For you, the cost will look different — but it will still be real. It might mean putting down your phone and actually listening to someone. It might mean doing the job nobody wants without complaining. It might mean serving the person who wronged you, the one who cut in line, the one who doesn’t deserve your kindness — because Jesus served you when you didn’t deserve his.
That’s the hardest part, and it’s where this whole week comes together. It’s not just about serving people who are easy to serve. It’s about walking up to the people who’ve used you, overlooked you, or hurt you — and choosing to say, “I’m here to be your server today.” Because that’s exactly what Jesus did for every single one of us.
We were the line-cutters. We were the opportunists. We were the ones clinging to rank and angling for position. And Jesus looked at all of that, walked across the line of sacrifice, and said, “I’m going to be your server today.” That’s the gospel. And the only fitting response is to go and do the same.
What Else the Bible Says About This
- –13 — This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
- — Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.
- — For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
- — And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice — the kind he will find acceptable.
Let’s Apply This…
This is the last day. No more theory. Pick one relationship in your life — a friend, a family member, a classmate, even someone who’s been difficult — and commit to serving them this week with no expectation of anything in return. Not for credit. Not to feel good about yourself. Just because Jesus crossed the line for you, and now it’s your turn. What would it look like to walk up to that person and, with your actions, say: “I’m here to be your server today”?
God’s Message to You
“I didn’t wait for you to deserve it. I didn’t wait for you to get your act together. I crossed the line when you were still cutting in it. I served you when you were still trying to be first. And I’d do it again. That’s how deep my love goes. Now I’m asking you to take what I’ve given and pass it on. Not perfectly. Not impressively. Just willingly. Walk across the line. Say the words. Mean them. The sacrifice is real, but so is the joy on the other side. I’ll be right there with you.”
(Based on –28; –13; )
Prayer
Jesus, you crossed the line for me. You gave up everything — your throne, your comfort, your life — so that I could be rescued. And you didn’t wait for me to earn it. You just did it. I want to live like that. I want to stop hoarding my time, my energy, my attention, and start giving them away the way you gave yourself away. Give me the courage to say “I’m here to serve” to the easy people and the hard people. Help me mean it. And help me remember that every time I cross the line of sacrifice, I’m following you. Amen.
Reflection Questions
- The line between humility and pride is sacrifice. What is the specific sacrifice God might be asking you to make right now — in your relationships, your time, your pride?
- Jesus served the people who abandoned and betrayed him. Is there someone in your life who’s hurt you that God might be calling you to serve? What would that look like?
- Looking back on this whole week, what’s the one idea that challenged you most? What is the one thing you want to be different about how you live going forward?
